• Western Australia (WA): Perth is classified as 'regional' for the 491 visa. This makes it an incredibly attractive option for tech workers who want the lifestyle of a major capital city while satisfying regional visa requirements.

Remember, if your occupation is on the short-term list (like ICT Project Manager), you are still fully eligible for 190 and 491 nomination, even though you don't qualify for the 189 visa. Don't forget to check out the QLD, SA, TAS, and NT programmes as well.

When you're dealing with high competition, making sure your points score is as high as possible is absolutely essential. If you're tied with another applicant, the Department uses a "Date of Effect" tie-break, whoever reached their points score first gets the invite. Here's how you can edge out the competition:

• Nail the English Test: Getting 20 points for Superior English is arguably the most impactful thing you can do. PTE Academic is incredibly popular among IT professionals because the format is highly structured and results are usually released very quickly. Aim for 79+ across all bands.
• Age Optimisation: If you're approaching your 33rd birthday, try to get your application lodged before you cross over, so you retain the maximum 30 age points.
• Australian Work Experience: If you've studied in Australia, use your 485 graduate visa to lock down local IT roles. Australian experience points are highly lucrative.
• Study Points: A Master's degree in Australia adds base points, and studying at an Australian institution offers an extra +5 study points.
• Professional Year: The Professional Year programme (run by the ACS) grants a solid +5 points and is highly recommended for IT graduates already in Australia.
• NAATI CCL: Earning +5 points via the credentialed community language test is a great option if you speak a language other than English.
• Partner Skills: If your partner can secure a skills assessment in their own occupation and has competent English, that's another +10 points to your total.
